About this deal

The story follows the life of Girija Prasad, a man and a scientist in Andaman Islands in the newly independent India. It talks of the inhabitants in this place and the surrounding environment. Nature or to be more specific “Earth” is the binding as well as connecting link in this book; we go from Islands to Fault-lines that is Burma(Myanmar) with Its Civil war and military regime, we follow the freedom and imprisonment of one Plato, his mother..... we go to the mountains and then to the glaciers, a place where the most primitive of tribes show wisdom surpassing the brightest of minds.... Latitudes of Longing is a book that is beautiful and lyrical, something that is read and savoured slowly to fully immerse oneself in this journey; a journey that spans a few decades or thousands of years? We must find out ourselves. Buk: Well, twist my arm, pass over that bottle, though I prefer beer, personally. Or even better, bourbon. Swarup debuts withan inventive novel in stories that features a multigenerational cast in search of love and worldly purpose. . . . By integrating magical elements—talking glaciers and yetis appear—Swarup eschews conventional love stories to focus instead on many forms of desire, while zigzagging across time and place. This offersbeautiful depictions of humanity through a successfully experimental form.” — Publishers Weekly

Book of Longing by Leonard Cohen | Waterstones

Book of Longing is my favorite volume of poetry and Leonard Cohen is my favorite poet. If you’re a fan of his music but haven’t given any of his poetry a try, this is the perfect place to start. Latitudes of Longing left me reeling, weighted under the sheer beauty of its prose. It swept me off my feet and left me breathless. Often this style of writing comes across as overly sentimental and turns me off. That is not the case with this novel. All my life, longings lived inside me, rising up like nocturnes to wail and sing through the night.” And now is the time for my favorite, though there were a lot I liked, this one became my best THERE FOR YOU, I wanted to post a few lines of it but couldn't choose, so... For all my critiques, I'd recommend this simply because it feels like the first book of an author who will go on to greater things: this may be uneven but at its best, it's glorious. of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd We are not mad. We are human. We want to love, and someone must forgive us for the paths we take to love, for the paths are many and dark, and we are ardent and cruel in our journey.”

The beloved The Secret Life of Bees author spins new gold from one of the greatest stories ever told...this is a deeply tender story of two outliers who find each other: a very human Jesus full of fire, yearnings and doubts about being the Messiah, and an even more fiery Ana (Jesus calls her “Little Thunder"), who refuses the traditional role of women to find her own voice, and promote the voices of all women. Provocative, passionate and extremely moving, this is both a love story for the ages and a portrait of a woman way ahead of her biblical times. Yaltha is indeed a fascinating character, who sees and experiences tragedy but refuses to be victimized. The advice she gives to Ana is that all will be well. How? By staying true to herself. By finding her own path. By reassembling her life — however broken — according to her own design. Ana, who faces her own tragedies, rises to that challenge again and again.

I am Ana. I was the wife of Jesus ben Joseph of Nazareth. I called him Beloved and he, laughing, called me Little Thunder. He said he heard rumblings inside me while I slept, a sound like thunder from far over the Nahal Zippori valley or even farther beyond the Jordan. I don't doubt he heard something. All my life, longings lived inside me, rising up like nocturnes to wail and sing through the night. That my husband bent his heart to mine on our thin straw mat and listened was the kindness I most loved in him. What he heard was my life begging to be born. As ancient as some stories will feel, the longing will grow, it won’t die, it will give roots to lifetimes endured in hopelessly dejected enthusiasm of the Apo’s love for Ghazala, it will precede the unconditional acceptance. If you reflect upon it, you will see connections and relationships illuminating the most disconnected things. Gravity defines time, space, and mortality. How can it not influence our inner state?" Hannah’s new novel is an homage to the extraordinary courage and endurance of Frenchwomen during World War II. Sue Monk Kidd, the brilliant, beloved storyteller who gifted us with The Secret Life of Bees, has done it again. Her most recent treasure, The Book of Longings, is the first book that has literally taken my breath away. As I read, I had to close it and breathe deeply, again and again.

famous blue raincoat یا you got me singinig یا winter lady و بقیه‌ی آهنگ‌هاش رو چند صد هزار بار گوش دادم... Buk: I like those poems you wrote. Straight, no chaser, not a lot of silly academic gobbledygook. The school poets don’t like ‘em, but I do. Exposed claw-like roots crept upon the ground like pale pythons. He could feel them inch toward him and halt at his toes. Standing there, Girija Prasad felt like an ant, shuffling around, tempted by the impossible. Latitudes of Longing by Shubhangi Swarup is place-based eco-fiction which emphasizes Earth’s powerful forces, especially earthquakes—in remote parts of India and more of south Asia following after India gained independence from the U.K in 1947. Relationships between eccentric and charismatic people and also human connections to nature are prominent in this novel of linked stories. At the opening of the book we meet the newly married Chanda Devi—who communicates not only with ghosts, but everything of the Earth and her husband Girija Prasad, a scientist. Reading of their romantic connections is as beguiling as watching flowers blossom in the best time-lapse video. Family and other characters with connections to this couple are featured as this book progresses. Also consistently throughout the natural world is a vibrant participant within the story.Whenever the sky quaked, women uttered a blessing: Lord preserve me from the wrath of Lilith. But I could never bring myself to say it. I would whisper instead, Lord, bless the roaring” Dr Alithea Binnie, played by Tilda Swinton with a northern accent and school-marmish glasses, specialises in "narratology", which sounds like an academic field made up for The Da Vinci Code, but is actually the study of narrative structure. She is at a conference in Istanbul when she buys a stripy glass bottle from a shop in the Grand Bazaar, and then polishes it with her electric toothbrush in her hotel room. Before she can say "Aladdin", a djinn appears, as played by Idris Elba with pointed ears and furry legs – and once you see Elba towering over Swinton, with his rumbling voice and his sweet mixture of authority and self-doubt, you can't picture anyone else in the role. It covers a vast canvas from the Andamans, Burma(Myanmar), Nepal and the no man's land separating India and Pakistan. Discuss the title of the novel. Ana is a character defined by her longings and aspirations. She is passionate about the power of writing, of narratives, of having a voice, as well as lifting up the voices of other women. How does the novel's theme of finding and expressing one's authentic voice unfold in the story? What forces work to silence contemporary women and what emboldens them? The universe may have come to life with a bang, but the possibilities were conceived in silence....

The period details are fascinating, but the dialogue can feel over-starched...Also, Ana’s feminist consciousness seems immaculately conceived, wholly uncontaminated by the trappings of her culture...Confined in Ana’s earnest narration, the story provides no critical distance, no irony, no real thematic ambiguity...The best historical fiction disorients us by demonstrating the uncanny nature of the past — a world like and not like ours, woven through with strands of ancient DNA. Unfortunately, The Book of Longings rarely confronts us with anything that might challenge our contemporary liberalism. The mental health picture of someone trying to cope with life and family in a secluded island. I feel like the character was kept imprisoned by the author as opposed to the many facets of the island life as presented in the first one third of the book. This is one of those books that both heralds a debut author's vast talent, and yet also fails to capitalise on it. Swarup is nothing if not ambitious but this is also her downfall as the four sections of the book become decreasingly coherent. Buk: You also had in there a lot of pictures of your own mug, which ain’t getting any prettier, man. Written over many years, including his time at a monastery on Mount Baldy in California, the poems are wide ranging, thoughtful, and occasionally much more sexual than you might expect. Overall this is a great collection which is enhanced by the drawings done by Cohen which fill the margins of the book. There are other collections of poetry I like more, but the expanse of this collection- spanning drawing and music and, of course, poetry, is probably unmatched by any other collection I can think of.Included are lyrics to a few of my favorite Cohen songs, like "Alexandra Leaving" and "Love Itself" which only makes the collection better. Valley follows Thapa, a friend of Mary’s son, who is from Nepal, and who meets a very young dancer at a bar in Kathmandu. He is closer to sixty, and she is ’…young enough to be his granddaughter.’ I learned to write poetry from reading and re-reading the poems in this book. I studied his work for meter and stress. I tried to figure out how he could’ve written such lines that burn with luminous intensity. Frequently, I’ll find myself in a situation where a stray line or phrase will drift through my thoughts… After publication, a few of the poems here later became lyrics on some of Leonard’s final albums. Songs like the dark and stunning “Nevermind” had their beginning in Book of Longing.
