About this deal

When replacing a compressor, it is important to add the right amount of Pag oil Which AC components require oil refills?

There are four main types of oil and their usage largely depends on what type of refrigerant is in the system, and what the compressor manufacturer stipulates, as follows: If there is a leak in the system, fix it first before adding oil to it. Otherwise, the system will require more oil soon and may lead to the failure of some parts. What Is PAG Oil? Some of the advantages of PAO-based lubricants are summarized in Table 5. Table 5. Property advantages of PAO-based lubricants. Source: Shell Disadvantages of PAO-Based LubricantsThe analysis suggests that there are in fact conditions where the mineral oil out-performs the PAO/PAG synthetics. Note in particular the performance level comparison for temperatures below 80°C. Improved heat transfer: Poe oil has excellent heat transfer properties, improving the overall performance of the system. It helps in efficient heat dissipation and allows the system to maintain optimal temperatures. With the exception of a few European models, vehicles newer than 1995 typically do not contain ester oil as the lubricant for the A/C system. Still, it is imperative that you look up the lubricant specifications for your particular car to determine the oil quantity and replacement type. Summary For hybrid-electric vehicles that use electrically driven compressors, polyol ester (POE) oil is not just recommended, its use is mandatory in many cases. Some of the disadvantages of PAO-based lubricants are outlined in Table 6. Table 6. Property disadvantages of PAO-based lubricants. Source: Shell Differences Between PAG- and PAO-Based Lubricants

PAO fluids are classified as a Group IV base oil and are made by a two-step reaction process using linear alpha-olefins like 1-decene. The first step is the synthesis of oligomers (polymers with few repeating monomer units) from the linear alpha-olefin. The second step is the hydrogenation of the remaining double bonds (unsaturation) in the oligomer and subsequent distillation to separate the unreacted monomer and light-viscosity grade PAO. Poe oil offers several advantages, such as superior lubrication, high compatibility, and low environmental impact. However, it also has limitations, including its hygroscopic nature and higher cost compared to traditional oils. Understanding these pros and cons is essential in making informed decisions regarding the use of poe oil in various applications. It is a synthetic oil that has excellent lubrication properties, a high viscosity index, and good resistance to oxidation. Hygroscopic nature: Pag oil has hygroscopic properties, which means it has a tendency to absorb moisture from the surrounding environment. This can lead to the formation of acids and sludge if not properly managed.

First, they cannot be used in the cylinder lubrication of internal combustion engines because the combustion by-product is silicon dioxide. Mineral oil: Mineral refrigerant oil, also known as Alkyl Benzene Oil, was the default option up until HFC refrigerants became common place. Today it is still used in older R-12 refrigerant systems. And because it does not absorb moisture, it is also used to lubricate O-rings and seals in both R-12 and R134a systems. R-134a has dominated the U.S. market for roughly two decades, but it too is beginning to be eclipsed by a new refrigerant due to environmental concerns. While R-134a does not deplete the ozone like R-12, it has been shown to have notable global warming potential (GWP). For this reason, R-1234yf was developed for its cooling abilities and its low GWP. Besides knowing how much PAG oil to add to AC system , you also have to use the correct viscosity oil. Each PAG oil type has a number such as PAG150 or PAG VC-46. This number refers to the PAG viscosity, similar to a number like 10W30 indicates the viscosity of regular engine oil.

Discussion

Heat and moisture resistance: Automotive air conditioning systems operate in various environmental conditions, including high temperatures and moisture-rich environments. It’s important to choose an oil that can withstand these conditions without compromising its performance. Polyalkylene glycol can be designed to form a wide variety of polymers. The design of the polymer can be tailored to the lubricant application to provide, for example, the desired viscosity, pour point, solubility and other attributes. Unlike pag oil, poe oil is hydrophobic, meaning it does not absorb moisture, making it less susceptible to degradation due to water. On the other hand, poe oil is the preferred option for systems that use r410a refrigerant. It provides excellent compatibility and enhances the performance of hermetic compressors. Additionally, poe oil exhibits superior thermal stability and resistance to moisture compared to pag oil. These qualities make them an excellent candidate for use as heat transfer fluids, specialty grease applications and DOT Type 5 automotive brake fluids. However, there are two limitations of silicones that must be considered for lubricating applications.

Chemical stability: Pag oil is chemically stable, which means it does not break down or degrade easily when exposed to heat, moisture, or other contaminants. This ensures long-lasting performance and reliability. They burn off cleanly, leaving no residue, and have been used as a carrier oil for solid lubricants for high-temperature chain lubrication. Some versions are food grade and biodegradable. They are used as compressor oils in rotary screw and reciprocating units, worm gear oils, fire-resistant lubricants, metal-working fluids and as brake fluids. Compatibility considerations: Although poe oil is compatible with a wide range of refrigerants, it may not be suitable for all systems. It is crucial to consider the specific requirements of the system and consult with experts to ensure optimal compatibility and performance. When it comes to selecting between pag and poe oil for various applications, it’s essential to consider the specific requirements of your system. Here are some key points to consider: On the other hand, poe oil tends to have a higher viscosity, which may limit its flow in certain system configurations.PAG oil, or Polyalkylene Glycol, is specially created for the AC compressors of automobiles. The fully synthetic hygroscopic oil is a compressor lubricator for the AC units that use R-134a refrigerant. PAG is a synthetic oil for AC compressors.
