It adopts the same natural, crisp tone with voices as the A7000, placing dialogue where it originates on screen. The Auto Object Framing mode uses face detection, By Pixel Super Resolution technology and the rule of thirds to automatically take better pictures of still lifes, moving subjects and macro close-ups. Sony's catchily named Pixel Super Resolution Technology ensures that the resulting image is still a full 20 megapixels in size, and the original uncropped image is also saved for easy comparison.
In September 1993 a improved A5000 (alpha version) was launched with a faster 33MHz ARM3 and the capability to expand memory beyond 4MB. Connections entail an HDMI input and output, optical input, and USB. The HDMI input can pass-through HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision signals (at 4K/60). There’s currently no 4K/120Hz support for gaming on the table. All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 20 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 6Mb. The A5000 is a camera that’s ideally suited to compact and smartphone upgraders, in fact in many ways it’s a much easier transition to make than to a DSLR. There’s the compact size, of course, which makes for a much more manageable transition to the world of interchangeable lens photography. The A5000’s control layout bears much more of a resemblance to a compact than that of a DSLR and the absence of a mode dial has less of an impact than you might expect. Pressing the centre button on the control wheel activates a virtual mode dial on the screen which, though not as fast and direct as a physical knob, comes a pretty close second.The 20 megapixel images are a little soft straight out of the camera using the default Standard creative style and ideally require some further sharpening in an application like Adobe Photoshop, or you can change the in-camera sharpening level. The built-in flash worked well indoors with no red-eye and good overall exposure. The night photograph was excellent, with the maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds and the Bulb mode offering lots of scope for creative night photography. You can set the image size to VGA, 2M or original and I found original images took around eight seconds to transfer. When you display the contents of the camera card on an iOS device they’re categorized by date which makes finding what you’re looking for easier than scrolling through a forest of thumbnails. Movie files are displayed as well as stills and AVCHD files are greyed so they can’t be wirelessly transferred, but MP4 transfer is supported. So it’s possible for example to shoot a short movie and upload it to Youtube via your phone.

Just like the best cinemas, the HT-A5000 gives a strong height dimension to the sound – making you feel like you’re in the jungle or experiencing the aircraft flying overhead. Sony’s Vertical Surround Engine, with up-firing speakers gives this cinematic experience, without the need for actual ceiling speakers. Three to four years is quite a typical upgrade cycle in workstations, so the intention here is to give a good idea of the performance increase one might expect from an older machine.
