About this deal

Born in 1812, Colonel James Moir was an entrepreneur in the town of Portsoy in the northeast of Scotland. Something of a giant in the local community, he was enthusiastic in his support for the growth and development of the town and encouraged progress in every way he possibly could. Inspired by its truly unique coastal location, the new expressions transport us to a place where the spirit is awakened and soul invigorated, inviting us to stop, take a breath and appreciate our surroundings.

This Glenglassaugh Revival presents a notable wine influence on the palate, albeit with a discernible bourbon influence. Whilst the sherry finish is present, it doesn’t assert itself as strongly as anticipated. It gives the impression of being a younger spirit, and the addition of water brings a more balanced taste. At a price point of €40, it is worth considering. However, at a higher range of €50 to €60, it may not be the best value for money. Rating: 81/100 The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars. Why we’re drinking these: Now under the stewardship of Rachel Barrie — our 2020 Master Blender / Distiller of the Year — we were curious what this oddball single malt could achieve on its own. We tried three different expressions.

Today I look at the Glenglassaugh Revival whisky. What a great name for a whisky release: Revival. I realised that this whisky comes with a unique story. The Glenglassaugh distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in the Highland Region. While Glenglassaugh opened in 1873, it’s seen extensive rebuilding over the years and the current distillery only settled down into its current state in the 1960s. A casualty of the industry downturn of the 1980s, it was mothballed in 1986 and it looked like the end was in sight. For 22 years, the distillery sat silent, but in 2008, the current chapter begun. The distillery was mothballed during an industry-wide slump at the start of the 20th century and remained silent for many years, slowly but surely slipping into a state of disrepair.

The story of Glenglassaugh distillery is the most fascinating tale, featuring an inspirational founder and a spirit that was almost too good to survive… With water: the taste profile shifts to reveal a touch of sweeter citrus notes, coupled with the taste of peppery strawberry soup. Finish: I am glad that I only have a small bottle because if it were a big bottle, it would still be standing in my whisky room in 10 years. It did not put me off tasting more from this distillery, and I will continue to explore the Glenglassaugh Evolution, and Glenglassaugh Torfa releases over the next couple of months. The ‘reimagined’ Glenglassaugh range includes the 12 Year Old, Sandend, and Portsoy expressions. The collection has also been given a new look, inspired by the sand tide at Sandend Bay on the Moray coast. Eventually, in 2011, a whisky appeared – Revival, the first spirit to be distilled at Glenglassaugh in more than 25 years. It wasn’t enough to keep things going, however, and in 2013 a seasoned player stepped in: The Benriach Company. The Benriach Company The finish is of medium length, with the bitterness and pungency carrying through. Mandarin peel and ginger notes persist until the end. Comments:
