About this deal

In The Snapper, Jimmy frequently practices being a DJ, much to the predictable annoyance of his father. The dialogue is brilliant, and hilarious -- again, not having been, I don't know if people there actually talk like this, but if they don't, they should.

When Jimmy Jr hands him a fiver he is both delighted and appalled, he wants to hug him and bury him. I always like to read an author's earliest books -- you usually see a lot of growth over a short space. Even though their raw talent and lofty aspirations gain the group notoriety, the pitfalls of fame began to tear at their newfound friendships as they prepare for their big show. In the third novel, he has moved out of home and is living with his girlfriend, Aoife but still makes frequent visits home.

Doyle disagreed with the change, saying that he never liked to be made for the big screen, which he thought was grainy. I previously only knew Roddy Doyle through his short stories that are sometimes in the New Yorker, and he had been on my list of authors to look into for some time.

But the Jimmy Sr who comes into his own in the Snapper then takes over the Van is full-fledged, a warm and rounded character to the very end. The Commitments" traces the rapid rise and even more rapid fall of Jimmy Rabbite Jr's unusual soul band. Doyle's novel The Commitments and its 1991 film adaptation inspired a 2013 musical stage production, directed by British theatre director Jamie Lloyd. The adaptation was originally planned as a television film, as an episode of the British television anthology drama series Screen Two, before Frears suggested that it be transferred to film.In his sparkling second novel, Roddy Doyle observes the progression of Sharon’s pregnancy and its impact on the Rabbitte family—especially on Jimmy Sr. The first omnibus edition of the author's celebrated Barrytown trilogy, with the first volume appearing here in casebound format for the first time.

In summary an enjoyable read that really put you in the atmosphere of the rougher edges of Dublin early-90s life. A third novel, The Van, was published and shortlisted for the 1991 Booker Prize, followed by a film adaptation in 1996.I'm not sure if I missed a nuance here and this was some dig at society, but either way it just was not to my taste. The band comes together but ends up consisting entirely of white musicians who have little experience with the genre.

The blurb for The Van made it seem like it was about a couple of buddies following the Irish World Cup team, but it really isn't. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Together in one volume, this book contains Roddy Doyle's trilogy about the Rabbitte family of Barrytown, north Dublin. The first is this chuckling wind-up, not really about the family but following the eldest son who forms a soul band out of the whitest of whities that falls apart due to personalities. He has produced work for a number of commercial clients, television projects, and composed music for two short films. Thus, with a bit of hesitation, since I didn't want the novel to be a let down after the movie, nor did I want the novel to make me disappointed in the movie, I picked up the Barrytown Trilogy with the intent of initially just reading The Commitments. His first novel, The Commitments, was published to great acclaim in 1987 and was made into a very successful film by Alan Parker.
