About this deal

Though the Service knew that all were innocent, it was not until August 1982 that, thanks to intelligence from Oleg Gordievsky, it finally identified John Cairncross as the Fifth Man in the Ring of Five. He controlled MI5 counterespionage throughout the war with determination and elan, and was the outstanding candidate for the Director-General's chair in 1946. A portrait by him of Air Marshal Sir Arthur Tedder (1st Baron Tedder) in the Shetland Museum was accepted there as a gift from a donor who had received it from Liddell’s widow, for reasons of Tedder’s Shetland background. Hoover did not take the necessary action and the United States forces were not prepared for the attack on 7th December, 1941. In 1989 he was elected 'The Experts' Expert' by the Observer and in 2003 he was the recipient of the US Association of Former Intelligence Officers' Lifetime Literature Achievement Award.

It then went to Guy Liddell and various other Soviet-experts, all of whom expressed the opinion that M was allowing his personal distaste for Communism to swamp his judgement.

Indeed, in The Greatest Treason, Deacon outlined Wilkinson’s machinations behind the scenes, attributing her reservations about Liddell to what Münzenberg had personally told her about his ‘enemy in British counter-espionage’ before he was killed. Roger Hollis, to whom the paper was first submitted, sent it back with the comment that it was over-theoretical. Even making allowances for the rhetorical flourish of granting Liddell a ‘mythical’ status, I have always been a little sceptical of this judgment. After the war, Liddell joined Scotland Yard where, in liaison with Special Branch and the Foreign Office, he was involved in breaking a spy ring based around the All Russian Cooperative Society in London. Glasgow, and for the next six years attended Anderson’s College, Glasgow, and classes at Glasgow University in steam, heat, general mechanical and civil engineering.

He was thereafter briefly known for portraits of those involved in the Second World War – including many who were casualties of it – often working from photographs. His unhappy marriage to Calypso Baring was dissolved in 1943, after she left him and joined her half-brother, Lorillard Suffern Tailer, in the United States. It took me a while to get through this: mostly the extended day and as consequence the additional hours in the garden, so come late evening the eyelids were drooping. The diaries show Liddell dealing with the fallout from Burgess' various debauched adventures in previous years, but he struggled to comprehend that his friend could be allied to Maclean and that the two might have voluntarily gone to Russia.Sillitoe had worked in East Africa as a young man, but since 1923 as a domestic police officer, so he hardly met Petrie’s criteria, either.

Kent later argued that he had shown these documents to Ramsay in the hope that he would pass this information to American politicians hostile to Roosevelt.

His social connections proved important because in 1940 he employed Anthony Blunt as his personal assistant and became a close friend of both Guy Burgess and Victor Rothschild, and was acquainted with Kim Philby.
