About this deal

Its profound and often moving messages are still as relevant and important as when they were first written- possibly even more so. The book, like the television series, contains a number of Cold War undertones including subtle references to self-destruction and the futility of the arms race.

I had expected Cosmos to be a real deep dive into the workings of our Solar System etc but what amazed me was that Cosmos is much more about history and in particular ancient history. Carl Sagan's writings are amazingly still so current today, that I am again struck by how much we missed when this genius died so young. The book Cosmos I recomend it to all you, who love to read books of Astronomy and themes which envolve about it. The 1986 special edition of Cosmos features new computer animated sequences and filmed segments with Sagan, as well as new narration.

Then something pops up that makes you realize the actual date of the book (such as when he refers to a NASA mission scheduled for 1982). In the Cosmos Update ten years later, Sagan remarks on RNA also controlling chemical reactions and reproducing itself and the different roles of comets (potentially carrying organic molecules or causing the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event).

However, unlike those series, which were shot entirely on film, Cosmos used videotape for interior scenes and special effects, with film being used for exteriors and location shooting (this film-video hybrid format was common in British scripted television at the time, but less so in documentary productions). As a big fan of Neil deGrasse Tyson's recent documentary series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, which honors Carl Sagan's original work from 1980, I was excited to listen to Sagan's companion book - now available in audio for the first time. The episode ends with the possibility of the terraforming and colonization of Mars and a Cosmos Update on the relevance of Mars' environment to Earth's and the possibility of a human mission to Mars.

On August 5, 2011, plans were announced for a sequel to the series, bringing up-to-date special effects and scientific discoveries to the themes and messages of the original series. So, I thank you very much for this moment (Commentars), in which I can express my gratitull to everybody have been part of my interection this year (2022).

The journeys of the Voyager probes are put in the context of the Netherlands in the seventeenth century, with a centuries-long tradition of sailing ship explorers, and its contemporary thinkers (such as Constantijn Huygens and his son Christian). The series is notable for its groundbreaking use of special effects, which allow Sagan to seemingly walk through environments that are actually models rather than full-sized sets. He raises issues about anti-scientific movements in society and how an uneducated society is more likely to throw itself into irrational conflicts. It covers a wide range of scientific subjects, including the origin of life and a perspective of our place in the universe. All used books might have various degrees of writing, highliting and wear and tear and possibly be an ex-library with the usual stickers and stamps. In 2002, a special two-disc "collector's edition" of music from the series was released to coincide with the DVD reissue, containing complete versions of many of the songs from the series only available as snippets on previous releases.
