About this deal

A railroad system constructed through the area in 1835 provided distribution for local agricultural markets, and the railroad’s extension in the mid-1850s provided a foundation for the town of Edgewood’s development. The wooden railroad bridge crossing the nearby Gunpowder River was burned in April 1861 during the Baltimore riots, and Confederate soldiers burned it a second time in July 1864. Our disturbing story takes place in small Maryland town: Edgewood where the mutilated bodies of several young teenage girls are found in 1988. Press called the murderer as Van Gogh killer because of his tendencies to cut the pieces of ears of his victims but mostly he’s called Boogeyman!

The first of the killings, of a young girl abducted from her bedroom in the middle of the night, occurs not far from Chizmar’s parents’ house. Three more follow, plunging Edgewood’s citizens into panic and apprehension. Chizmar and a fellow obsessive named Carly Albright do some amateur sleuthing that appears to inflame the killer, who takes to bombarding Chizmar with hang-up calls and scrawling an ominous message on Albrigt’s front porch. There are, however, no immediate leads to the killer’s identity, and it seems the case is destined to join those of the Green River and Zodiac killings in the annals of unsolved American murder sprees, but some decades-after-the-fact surprises are in store. From the founder and publisher of Cemetery Dance Magazine, a publication specialising in horror and suspense, comes a spine-chilling story about a serial killer terrorising a small town in the state of Maryland. A metafictional retelling of events that took place in 1988, Chasing the Boogeyman is tinged with Stephen King-style horror, and indeed Richard Chizmar has worked closely with King on a number of projects. His magazine “Cemetery Dance” is now in its 32nd year of publication, and he also co-wrote Gwendy’s Button Box, with his friend, Stephen King. this book is a whole new thing; a gripping metafictional mélange of true crime and crime fiction, memoir and horror, and chizmar pulls off this ambitious undertaking seamlessly.

Chasing the Boogeyman perfectly captures the feeling of growing up in a small town facing an existential threat from real evil. Chizmar’s Edgewood is post-Bradbury-esque, not as idyllic as that author’s Green Town...it’s grittier and more grounded in a reality contemporary readers will recognize and respond to. Richard Chizmar has invented a new literary genre—brilliant!” —Bev Vincent, co-editor with Stephen King of Flight or Fright Many of us love living in a small town. It seems to offer us peace, freedom from crime, deliverance from unending traffic snarls, and a somewhat bucolic life. It's a panacea for what many seek...a quiet life. Chasing the Boogeyman pulled me down deep then buried me alive. Combining gritty true crime with the darkly imagined, Chizmar offers something unique—and uniquely frightening.” Graham, Jamie (April 27, 2023). RC: The first issue was published in December 1988 when I was a senior in college, but I started reading submissions and promoting the magazine earlier that summer. I had no idea at the time if we would survive a year or a decade. It didn’t really matter. I just kept my head down and focused on the work on my desk. The first book we published – three years later – was an extraordinary collection of crime and suspense fiction by Ed Gorman. It was called Prisoners and Other Stories. Dean Koontz wrote the afterword. Thank you to Gallery Books and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Intimidating at first, but a real joy from start to finish. I’m honestly not sure if it transformed my writing. The entire experience felt like a blur and was over before I knew it. Richard teams up with Carly, a fellow journalist, to try and solve the case, and is given details of the case from a detective (if I didn’t already know it was fiction, this would have been my first clue). Richard spends much time reminiscing about his small-town upbringing, including the minutiae of life in Edgewood. Those who are nostalgic about the 1980s may find these parts engaging. However, they didn’t contribute to the plot development at all, and the story dragged in places.
