About this deal

Harry, Sue and Little Ben when faced with these empty spaces and realising that the Gods are taking a well earned nap or a cup of tea and cake or boasting about their accomplishments the group decide to fill these gaps. The words and the Illustrations work in harmony with one another and cause this book to have an endearing, breathtaking quality to it – a story that is accessible for all…it’s something very special indeed. The story in itself is a wonderfully crafted delight, it’s concept and execution by David Almond is masterful as you would expect, which highlights the impact of the story. Vermutlich können sich manche Kinder auch alleine damit beschäftigen und sich so ihre Gedanken machen. Mouse Bird Snake Wolf is one of the most beautifully constructed graphic novels I have ever had the opportunity to read.

The imagination of three children takes on unexpected life in a creation tale from the dream team of David Almond and Dave McKean. It is an exciting read with an usual tale about a world only partially made by gods, who being satisfied with themselves decide that they do not need to fill the gaps left in the world. This has a good moral and will be a great lesson to those who think they can overpower others as well as a great read!McKean’s illustrations appear in books by authors such as Neil Gaiman, David Almond, Ray Bradbury and Stephen King to name a few. Despite being incredibly positive with my class of 30 children only 21 children are enjoying some of it, 8 don't get it and haven't enjoyed it at all. I like little Ben because he was very understandable about doing those things which were not good for him. Even I struggled to understand the story that was intentionally 'written on many levels' as described by CLPE. That’s until Harry, Sue and little Ben begin to fill the gaps of the world: with a mousy thing, a chirpy thing and a twisty legless thing.

Mouse Bird Snake Wolf is a 2013 graphic novel, written by David Almond and illustrated by David McKean. He is an experienced creative writing teacher and has worked for the Arvon Foundation and for schools, colleges and universities and is in demand as a speaker at festivals and conferences around the world. But their world has gaps in it filled with emptiness, gaps that intrigue Harry, Sue, and little Ben until they begin to see what might fill them. The final picture within this graphic novel for me sums up my thoughts about the meaning of the book – lurking in the darkness we see two red eyes staring up at the world the Gods created, waiting for its time to surface…again! The gods have created a world – they’ve built mountains, a sea and a sky – and now their days are filled with long naps in the clouds (and tea and cake). As the children's ideas take shape, the power of their visions proves to be greater than they, or the gods, could ever have imagined. David Almond’s Mouse Bird Snake Wolf centres around a world that has been created by the gods – heavily influenced by the Greek Gods of myth and legend.

The artwork that decorates every page is a joy to behold and Dave McKean excels in bringing something uniquely different with his illustrations in Mouse Bird Snake Wolf but they still contain that Dave McKean magic that all fans are thirsty for. A play, Wild Girl, Wild Boy, was published in March 2002, and a stage version of Skellig was published in April 2002 to coincide with the National Theatre’s production of the play.Along the way, they'll be dazzled by the lush lyricism of the tale and the wild emotional swings from page to page, as well as McKean's creative use of mixed materials and compositional space. David Almond is the author of Skellig, Bone Music, Island, The Savage, The Tightrope Walkers, A Song for Ella Grey, The Dam, The Colour of the Sun, and many other novels, stories, picture books, opera librettos, songs and plays.

While I'm not much of an artist or illustration enthusiast, I found myself staring endlessly into Dave Mckean's art while possible class discussion points kept tumbling out of my head. Make sure to look into the author and subject of this one because it isn't for the average reader/family.Filling this rich tapestry that Dave McKean has expertly woven with a mousy thing, a chirpy thing and a twisty legless thing – but could their imagination and creativity and the lack of supervision from the Gods end in chaos? Almond’s words and McKean’s artwork blend brilliantly to create a book that is like no other, the words and illustrations seem to dance with one another on the page, they have a fluidity about them that is enchanting, guiding the reader deeper within the story and giving Mouse Bird Snake Wolf its phenomenal power and in my opinion makes this a truly captivating and beautiful read. Speaking to my year group partner (assuming it was just my class who didn't like it) in the other class almost all of her class aren't enjoying it at all (26 out of 30). This was followed by The Boy Who Swam with Piranhas (2012) a children’s book illustrated by Oliver Jeffers, Mouse Bird Snake Wolf (2013) with illustrator Dave McKean, A Song for Ella Grey (2014) and The Tightrope Walker (2014), a novel for young adults, and The Colour of the Sun (2018). In my opinion Mouse Bird Snake Wolf is a precious gift to the world – a quick read but one you will never forget.
